In the early 20th century, the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation devised plans for a massive dam on the Arizona-Nevada border to tame the Colorado River and provide water and hydroelectric power for the developing Southwest. Construction within the strict timeframe proved an immense challenge when it began in 1931. The Bureau of Reclamation, the department subsidising the project, supplied a whopping 3.25 million cubic yards of concrete for the dam itself, plus another 1.11 million cubic yards for the power plant and additional facilities. This quantity of concrete would be enough to build 3000 miles of road.
Large Hadron Collider
The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is the world’s largest and most powerful particle accelerator that was first started up on 10 September 2008. Straddling the French-Swiss border, the $9 billion CERN collider complex is buried at a depth of up to 575 feet (175 meters) and the tunnel complex runs along a 17-mile circuit. Scientists involved in the project say the laboratory was built underground because the Earth’s crust provides protection against radiation. The CERN collider is composed of some 9,600 super magnets – which are 100,000 times more powerful than the gravitational pull of Earth - that fire protons around a circular track at mindboggling speeds.
The Channel Tunnel
At 31.4 miles long, the Channel tunnel is the 11th longest tunnel in use and the fourth largest for rail passengers. A whopping 23.5 miles of the tunnel sits underwater, giving it the longest undersea portion of any tunnel in the world. Construction started in 1988 and was completed in 1994 at a cost of £4.65 billion (roughly £12 billion in today's money). Up to 400 trains pass through this tunnel everyday carrying an average of 50,000 passengers, 6,000 cars, 180 coaches and 54,000 tonnes of freight.
The Panama Canal
Following the failure of a French construction team in the 1880s, the United States commenced building a canal across a 50-mile stretch of the Panama isthmus in 1904. More than 60 million pounds of dynamite were used to excavate and construct the canal and sadly nearly 20,000 French and 6,000 American workers died during it completion. Every day about 40 ships pass through which equates to about 14,500 ships every year.
The Burj Khalifa
Standing at 828 meters tall, the Burj Khalifa is three times taller than the Eiffel Tower and is currently rank the tallest in the world. Construction began in 2004 and finally opened in 2010, during which time up to 12,000 workers worked on the building per day. Construction of the building used more than 110,000 tons of concrete, 55,000 tons of steel rebar, and 22 million man-hours to complete.
