If you were to ask anyone in Britain today ‘What do we manufacture?’ You would most likely be met with the quizzical response…… ‘We don’t manufacture anything in Britain anymore do we?’
Admittedly, during the 80’s, Britain made a major lurch towards the services industry and some of our most notable manufacturing industries declined (think British Steel, British Mining etc…) But Britain persisted and whilst some of our major manufacturing industries have all but disappeared, we still manufacture a lot of stuff in this country, that’s why we’re the 9th largest industrial nation in the world. In fact the manufacturing industry accounts for a significant share of the industrial sector in most developed countries and is also a major wealth contributor to our economy and contributes £6.7tn to the global economy. It accounts for 10% of our GVA and makes up 45% of our exports so it is still as relevant today as it was in days gone by.
Almost every object you interact with today had been manufactured in a factory somewhere in the world. In Britain we manufacture everything from clothing and footwear to mineral fuels, cars and nuclear reactor parts… We really do manufacture something for everyone.
UK Manufacturing Industries as a whole are very important for the economy, not only in terms of wealth, but also in the number of people it employs (approximately 2.7 million people in 2016). With the manufacturing Sector currently enjoying a boost in output, it will also be looking to fill the skills gaps left by the increasing demand for manufactured goods. This is good news for anyone working in the industry or looking at a career in manufacturing.
It’s not all grubby clothes and dirty hands either, even though the more traditional elements of manufacturing still require you to get your hands dirty, as technology has progressed, there are also a lot more white collar aspects to it nowadays in areas such as Research & Development, Design and Inspection.
