With recent Engineering UK figures showing we need 1.8 million new engineers and technicians by 2025 the importance of programs such as Tomorrows Engineers is more paramount than ever. As mentioned in previous blog posts, pupils with strong skills in STEM subjects are either a) not being encouraged to pursue these skills or b) being subject to age old views and myths about the industry which just don’t hold true anymore. Either way, betime anyone attempts to harness these skills during the tail end of their teenage years it is often too late, and the youngster has decided on an alternative route in life.
Ann Watson, chief executive of Semta states “We need children of primary-school age to be given the opportunity to see what a modern cutting-edge engineering workplace looks like.” The fundamental problem we appear to have to ensure this happens is that teachers lack knowledge about the career opportunities in the engineering industries. After all, it’s teachers that pupils look up to for guidance when it comes to figuring out what they want to do with their lives.
And this is where Tomorrows Engineers hopes to change the ways that STEM subjects and careers in the industry are presented to youngsters at school. This is done by a variety of methods including in-school workshops, this year’s focussing on energy production and reducing our carbon emissions in the process. After the initial workshop, pupils continue their learning by applying their knowledge to a carbon capture and storage project that lasts for 6-8 weeks after the workshop.
Another exciting event that occurs is the EEP Robotics Challenge which immerses young people in real-world engineering, technology and computing challenges. Using Lego Mindstorms Education EV3 sets, students are encouraged to demonstrate the skills they’ve learned at regional and national challenge events held around the country. Teams also research and present their own solution to a contemporary scientific problem developed by LEGO Education with NASA.
These activities, along with many others are regularly promoted by outfits such as Tomorrows Engineers and are vitally important in inspiring and motivating our next generation of Engineers. Here at Ambitek we would encourage any company that requires engineers to get in touch with them and see what you can do to help next year, after all, these kids are our future.
